Description

Private investigator Kinsey Millhone is back, sassy and self-reliant as ever. Visiting a small town in the Sierras, Kinsey aids a recent widow, Selma Newquist, who believes that her detective husband did not die of a heart attack, as reported, but from foul play. Kinsey sifts through the paper trail Tom Newquist left behind, trying to discover what he was investigating before he died. Kinsey is about to call it quits when she is severely beaten in her motel room. Spurred to probe further she soon unearths clues regarding a long-unsolved murder that may or may not implicate the colleagues of Tom Newquist. Wry and intelligent, Kinsey Millhone solves the case -- and Sue Grafton delivers the goods. "Kinsey Millhone is the epitome of the tough, independent, smart, feisty PI . . . . entertaining and engaging. " (Booklist)

Sue Grafton is back with her fourteenth alphabet mystery. Kinsey Millhone, private investigator extraordinaire, vacillates over the job she's accepted this time. Hired by Selma Lindquist, widow of a well-liked and much-respected small-town detective, Kinsey is in search of the reason for Tom Lindquist's troubled behavior just before his sudden death. Mary Peiffer is a convincing Kinsey; she matter-of-factly extols the virtues of staying single, junk food and dropping this case. Peiffer effectively differentiates the other characters with her pitch or pace, but she can't make them likable. Peiffer conveys their disdain for each other and their reluctance to help the intrusive P.I. Listeners may want to leave the town of Nota Lake even more than Millhone, but loyal fans will wait for the answer. R.N. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
